Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 – 5 February 1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, philosopher, and a leading writer of the Victorian era. He strongly influenced 19th-century art, literature, and philosophy. Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, a village in Dumfriesshire, and attended the University of Edinburgh, where he excelled in mathematics, inventing the Carlyle circle.
