Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013), known by the stage name Lou Reed, was an American singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He is known as the frontman, guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground, and had a solo career that spanned five decades. Although not commercially successful in its time, the Velvet Underground has come to be regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of underground and alternative rock music.
