Alexander Joseph "Lex" Luthor () is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Lex Luthor originally appeared in Action Comics #23 (cover dated: April 1940). Lex Luthor is considered to be "The World's Greatest Criminal Mastermind", and has since endured as the archenemy of the superhero Superman. From the 1960s to the mid-1980s, Lex Luthor was depicted as a narcissistic and egotistical mad scientist.
