Yvur. Cvlt. Pop!: Kid Rock - Devil Without a Cause

Hi there and welcome back to another YCP, where we take one of your suggestions... apparently... and make an entire podcast about it.On this episode we're looking at Devil Without a Cause, the fourth album from US rap-rock sensation Kid Rock, released on the 18th of August 1998. Now, we know, here in 2025 Kid Rock is very much considered a risible character, more famous for trying to "Own the libs!" by riding on a CGI middle finger in videos, bum licking Donald Trump, calling anyone who disagrees with him a snowflake and filming himself shooting crates of Bud Light... like any normal 50 year old man would do.But there is a small moment in time when Kid Rock was actually considered a very interesting musician. That time, of course, was the 1990's. After a few albums where his early Vanilla Ice lite schtick evolved into the gangster pimp, hip-hop rock star, that eventually turned him into a Platinum selling artist, Kid Rock was very much considered another star on the nu-metal production line. Whether that was really accurate or not is up for debate, but with DWAC, he absolutely captured the zeitgeist at exactly the right time to be entered into the conversation alongside Eminem, Limp Bizkit and the rest, as one of the rabble rousing crowd of late 90's American jock rock. The album sold loads, like, really loads, and Rock performed at everything from Woodstock 99 to the MTV Music Awards. It all went so well for him that he ended up marrying Pamela Anderson. So, we have a couple of questions; how did it happen? Does the album hold up? And, if it was so successful, why does no one seem to like or respect the bloke now?
