Yvur. Cvlt. Pop!: Brockhampton - Saturation III

Hey there, welcome to another YCP, which is different from your previously scheduled episode. Gaz isn't his best, so good 'ol Sam Sleight has tagged in and decided HE wants to talk about Saturation III, the third album from the Texan (although they relocated to LA) hip-hop boyband collective Brockhampton, released on the 15th of December 2017.Not only was it Brockhampton's third album... it was their third of that year! The collective had gained a sizeable following after their debut mixtape All American Trash in 2016, and then decided to follow that up by releasing three albums in a year. It made them one of the most talked about artists in the genre, with their pop sensibilities, wry humour and band leader Kevin Abstract's open and honest reflections on his sexuality and the trials and tribulations of being a gay man in the rap community. A year later they were number one on the US Billboard 200 with their 4th album Iridescence. A pretty meteoric rise when you consider that the first of the Saturation set didn't even chart here in the UK! But, weirdly, it all seemed to fall apart quite quickly. Whatever, the quality of the big beat, old school hip-hop and pure pop nous on show here means that, although they may have shone briefly, Brockhampton shone bright for a while.
