Hey there, welcome back to another one of your suggestions for a YCP Podcast. Thanks for that. On this episode we look at the 6th album from the UK prog-rock pioneers Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, released on the 22nd of November 1974.Genesis were one of the big progressive rock behemoths of the early 1970's, but all was not well in their camp. Where pure jamming and collaboration was the order of the day in the creation of their early records, by the time it came to Lamb... frontman Peter Gabriel had decided to take full control of the vision of the bands new album, concocting a concept about a lad called Rael who lived in New York and the fantastical adventures he gets up to, and went off to work with movie director William Friedken on making a movie of his idea (which never came to fruition). Gabriel return to the band, but there was personal trauma for him in the complicated birth of his child, something which he felt wasn't taken seriously at all by his bandmates, leaving his unhappy and isolated in the ranks of Genesis. The rest of the band created the musical template for the record with Gabriel out of the picture. Mad to think then, that what came from all of this is, in the eyes of many Genesis purists, the bands definitive statement; a sprawling, dramatic, dark, progressive rock opera that lasts over an hour and a half and cannot be cut, chopped or listened to out of sequence. Gabriel left the band in the aftermath and embarked on a fantastic solo career, Genesis got poppier and poppier with Phil Collins fronting the band, making this a fascinating full stop to this period of one of the 70's true giants of rock.
