Trve. Clvssic. Pop!: Korn - Korn
Hello and welcome to another Classic album podcast. It's, again, maybe not the one you expected, but we wanted to mark an important occasion in the metal scene by releasing a podcast on the 30th anniversary of the self-titled debut album from Bakersfield "Godfathers of nu-metal" Korn, released on the 11th of October 1994. The story and impact of the record has been discussed many, many times over the years. But, as two people who were there at the time, we wanted to go back and really dive deep into the impact that Korn had. From their formation as a amalgam of local California bands Creep and Sexart, the band found a new sound and then unheard levels of personal and emotional lyrics from frontman Jonathan Davis. Nothing was like Korn at the time, and after their gigs started to fill up with confused and intrigued punters, they were signed to a major label and recorded with an untested producer in Ross Robinson. The work that took place between the pairing has gone down in history as one of the most infamous in music, with Robinson pushing Davis to the absolute limits. When Korn was released it became something of a cult hit, with Machine Head's Robb Flynn and Sepultura's Max Cavalera being two of the more high profile fans to sign its praises. Slowly but surely, Korn's reputation grew, and by the time they stole the day at the 1996 Monsters of Rock they were ready to become metal's next superstar band. The nu-metal explosion that came after can be traced back to this very moment, for an album of such darkness and pain to inspire the biggest commercial boom in the genres history is quite staggering. 30 years on, Korn remains one of heavy music's most important records.
