This week’s guest is half viola player/half anaesthetist, Dr Arun Menon - the most niche superhero the world has ever seen......

Having suffered kidney failure in 2005, Arun made the difficult decision to put his hugely successful freelance career on hold and go back into education to begin the epic journey into medicine - his training began in 2006 and he is still three and a half years away from being a fully qualified anaesthetist. During this time, Arun was frequently studying/on the wards by day and performing at the Royal Opera House and with Birmingham Royal Ballet by night.

Seb and Verity chat with Arun about his duel career - the opportunity to draw similarities between viola playing and putting people to sleep is too hard to resist, particularly for Verity who is in full ‘end of the pier entertainer’ mode.

Arun talks about the intricacies of brain surgery, what it’s like trialling for principal viola jobs and stereotypes for different medical specialists...he’s irritatingly diplomatic!

Seb refers to his specialist medical knowledge (Breaking Bad) to quiz Arun on Nitrous Oxide.....unfortunately it seems Arun didn’t use that syllabus in his training.
