Explaining The Science of Risk And Trust with Dr Calvin Burns

The Perception Podcast · 2023-05-23

In this episode, Caroline talks to Associate Professor of Occupational Psychology at the University of Greenwich, Dr Calvin Burns. In this fascinating conversation Calvin and I debate the distinction between trust and faith, he outlines the five major markers that determine risky behaviour, and we examine what our automatically activated or 'implicit' attitudes tell us about our pre-conscious beliefs.

Please join her to look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Implicit or automatically activated attitudes are ingrained in us. Quick-fire computerised tasks are a good way to reveal our implicit attitudes. There's no time to adjust how you react. Some beliefs are so internalised that we no longer question them. Sometimes trust conditioning overrides primal survival instinct. Calvin shares examples. Learning to trust involves questioning and risk assessment, with faith this is less likely to be the case. Risk and trust perception has a significant impact on decision making. People can be risk takers in one domain, but very risk averse in another area. There is a mind-body link.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Implicit attitudes are pre-conscious or automatically activated. ´
‘Our perception of other people perceiving us affects our behaviour.’
‘Trust exists because of uncertainty.’
‘People know without knowing.’
