Service to Our Sea is the marine science podcast from Black Ocean Citizens, hosted by founding director, marine and fisheries social scientist Gurpreet Padda.



Black Ocean Citizens is a UK science led movement working to diversify career pathways for minoritised communities into marine, coastal and fishery sciences and governance, and to champion the work of Black and People of Colour ocean advocates.



Every episode brings you conversations with scientists, advocates, fishermen and fisherwomen, campaigners, community leaders and ocean thinkers. Together they explore the routes people take into ocean science, the barriers that still stand in the way, and what inclusive marine governance looks like in practice.



Expect honest talk about research life, funding and setbacks, stories of unconventional paths into marine conservation careers, and ideas for making ocean science accessible to the communities it serves, on land and at sea.



This podcast is for anyone who cares about the ocean and wants to see marine science reflect the communities it serves, or is curious about how diverse and often unheard voices are already shaping the future of our seas.



About the host: Gurpreet Padda leads marine and fisheries evidence at the Marine Management Organisation. She is the first ethnically minoritised person appointed to Norwich City Council cabinet as portfolio holder for Equalities and Social Justice, and the first woman of colour appointed to the Broads National Park Authority board. Her 22 year career spans government, academia, consultancy and activism.
