After holding this key artillery position, he was ordered to withdraw and then swiftly attacked by Confederate forces. The prevailing thought is that Sickles aimed to prevent the Confederates from gaining what he deemed another advantageous position. However, interestingly, there are no written accounts from Sickles himself or his staff supporting this theory!
